The Boys Are Back In Town…And Hungry For Grilled Tuna Steaks

I love it when Jake’s home from school and I get to cook for him and his friends. For his 20th birthday he wanted me to make marinated tuna steaks. I was delighted. I arrived at our Farmer’s Market at 8 sharp and headed straight to my favorite fish monger, Sam, at A & H Fish Market. It doesn’t get any better or fresher than this.

Sam cut six beautiful tuna steaks for me and I went home and began to prepare a birthday feast for Jake and four hungry friends.
INGREDIENTS
6 tuna steaks
1/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup soy sauce
3 TBS olive oil
2 TBS fresh lemon juice
3 TBS fresh chopped parsley
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp. fresh chopped oregano
1/2 tsp. fresh ground black pepper

I adapted this recipe from allrecipes.com.

Preheat grill to high.

Place steaks in a glass baking dish. Mix all ingredients and pour over fish. Turn fish once to make sure they’re well coated in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Cook steaks on grill for 5 minutes, turn and baste with remaining marinade. Cook for an additional 5 minutes. Don’t overcook or they will be dry.

Arrange on a nice platter. You can squeeze a little lemon on top for a zesty kick if you’d like.

Jake also requested my home-grown arugula salad.

When you’re feeding 20-year-old boys you need to have a lot of food. So here’s the birthday feast. Tuna steaks, arugula salad, green beans, tortellini and pesto, rice with pine nuts and garlic bread.

Jake didn’t want a cake–he’s never been a cake fan. His choice–my strawberry tart. These strawberries were picked before the strawberry thief showed up and the mystery was solved.

It was a great way to celebrate Jake’s 20th. He surfed with his friends and then had a great meal! Gone are the days of birthday parties at Chuck E Cheese, Bluebird Park or the high school pool. Next year it could be The Sandpiper, Blue Laguna or The Saloon when he’ll be drinking legal beers. I’m still struggling with the fact he’s no longer a teenager.

  1. Happy birthday Jake. Grilled tuna is one of my favorites and IF there are any leftovers, fish tacos are a good second.
